Oliver Stainer
Investment Director
Salisbury
What attracted you to a career in wealth management?
I have always enjoyed working with people, and wealth management gave me this and the opportunity to help clients achieve their long-term financial goals. I originally completed a master’s degree in construction management but soon realised my true passion was economics, so I continued my education and concurrently completed a degree in finance and investment, both from University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. I immigrated to England in 2001 and not long after completed my masters in wealth management through the CISI (Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment), and I have been a fellow of the institute for many years.
I’ve been a discretionary fund manager for Quilter Cheviot since 2012 and been working in the finance and investment industry for over 20 years. Prior to joining Quilter Cheviot, I worked in London as an institutional sales trader for SEB, one of Sweden’s largest banks. I also spent time as a stockbroker dealing the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) and an investment specialist within the equity research team at Edward Jones.
How do you approach your role on a daily basis?
Over the years, I have gained extensive experience in constructing well-diversified investment portfolios for private clients, trusts and charities in both the United Kingdom and South Africa. I believe personalisation and understanding an individual’s inspirations are at the heart of everything we do as wealth managers. I also partner with financial advisers and other professionals as I believe teamwork and bringing together the right people with the right knowledge is important in creating a financial plan that works from both a performance and tax efficiency perspective.
What are your interests outside of work?
I have a busy family life with two boys, and we all enjoy walking and cycling the many woodlands where I live outside of Salisbury, England. My wife is Welsh, so much of the year is spent in the beautiful Brecon Beacons and holidaying in Pembroke. I also enjoy camping with the family, teaching my boys sailing and archery, and I’m a keen landscape photographer when I have the time. I work in both digital and film and display prints of my work on my website.
