James Coker

Investment Manager
Birmingham

What attracted you to a career in wealth management?

I have always enjoyed researching investment ideas and communicating them with others. My interests and skill sets were cultivated through a series of internships with Smith & Williamson (now Evelyn), S.W. Mitchell Capital, and Charles Stanley. Since graduating Durham University in 2017 I have worked at Quilter Cheviot in the front office. Since then, I have attained the Chartered Institue for Securities and Investment's Investment Advice Diploma (CISI level 4) followed by the Chartered Wealth Manager Qualification (CISI level 7).

How do you approach your role on a daily basis?

In my role as an Investment Manager, I am responsible for managing bespoke portfolios for private clients, charities, pension schemes, and corporate entities. I also support other investment managers in the management of their clients’ portfolios which includes portfolio construction, security research, and investment proposal reviews. I regularly host client meetings, offering insights into market trends and portfolio performance. I also ensure portfolio alignment with client investment objectives as well as risk and ethical parameters. My commitment to personalized service and client-centric portfolio management is at the core of what I do.

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy learning languages, travelling to places of cultural and historical significance, reading, cooking, and keeping fit.

The value of your investments and the income from them can fall and you may not recover what you invested.
