Carl Millard

Investment Manager
Leicester

What attracted you to a career in wealth management?

I began my career at Albert E Sharp Stockbrokers in Birmingham which eventually became Gerrard then Barclays Wealth. I worked my way up the company from the back office and a variety of roles to Assistant Investment Manager and then Investment Manager.

Whilst at Barclays Wealth I moved to become a portfolio manager, responsible for managing all the collectivised portfolios at the Birmingham office. I was a part of the collective funds investment committee and wrote internal recommendation notes matching the best suited funds to the market environment.

Whilst I enjoyed the pure investment management side I missed the more personal side of the role, speaking to clients and building relationships with them and their financial advisers.

I therefore took the opportunity to move to Quilter Cheviot in Leicester in 2010 to return to the fuller and more rewarding role of Investment Manager. I have been fortunate ever since, working with a wide variety of clients for whom I manage their investment portfolios alongside regularly speaking and meeting them in person. Helping clients reach their investment and financial goals is the most rewarding part of the job.

How do you work with / look after clients?

Clients are at the heart of our business and they need to know that someone they trust is there looking after their hard earned investments and their best interests. I ensure that clients are informed, understand the risks involved and how I will go about constructing their portfolio to help them achieve their long term goals.

I am helped enormously by our extensive research department and strategists who provide me with the tools to do this, alongside my long standing experience in the industry and navigating difficult markets.

What are your interests outside of work?

I enjoy travel, exploring new cities and cultures with some of favourite places being Iceland and Japan. This gives you a different perspective on life and how people live.

I am seen as a bit of a film buff as I have always been a regular cinema goer and enjoy nothing more than spending a day watching films on the big screen. Music has also been a constant in my life and I have enjoyed rebuilding my vinyl collection since it’s renaissance. Now my children have grown up I have also started getting back to attending more gigs and concerts to experience live music which is something I have always been passionate about.

The value of your investments and the income from them can fall and you may not recover what you invested.
