Ben Murray

Investment Manager
Belfast

What attracted you to a career in wealth management?

My career began with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, after which I worked as a Project Engineer in Northern Ireland, England and Belgium. Despite finding this work interesting, I had long hoped to work in the investment field as in general I find stock markets and investing fascinating.

I began working for Quilter Cheviot in 2016 as an Investment Administrator, gradually completing the industry-standard exam pathway before finally qualifying as an Investment Manager several years later.

While my role has changed considerably since joining, the inherent and high degree of interaction with clients, fellow professionals and colleagues continues to be one of my favourite aspects. I feel fortunate to be able to say that I genuinely enjoy my work.

How do you work with / look after clients?

My aim as an Investment Manager is to fully understand what clients hope to achieve by investing, and in return to help them understand the opportunities as well as potential risks along the way.

I endeavour to construct investment portfolios that reflect each investor’s goals and wider circumstances, which are easy to comprehend, and which perform as clients have been led to expect. Regular, open-and-honest conversations with clients and their advisors are fundamental in achieving this.

What are your interests outside of work?

Most of my time outside work is spent with my wife, young children, and dog. We all love getting outdoors around the province’s parks and forests where we spend a lot of time during the summer months.

I enjoy a number of sports including golf and squash and try to fit both in on a weekly basis where time permits by way of exercise. I am also a fan of sports generally and like to watch football, tennis, and golf when I can.

Going to the cinema to watch highly anticipated film releases also remains a favourite pastime, though these days we usually have to make do with the living room TV!

The value of your investments and the income from them can fall and you may not recover what you invested.
