What attracted you to a role in wealth management?
When I studied at university for a degree in Economics I soon learned that most of the grand theories of how economies operate mainly have only a minor impact on the individual. I was more interested in how finances impact people's lives.
I want to be the best that I can be and for me being a Financial Planner means understanding the emotional basis of my clients' hopes and dreams, their concerns regarding whether their finances are being managed effectively now and for the future, and the natural apprehension associated with whether the plans for loved ones are adequate.
I use my extensive knowledge of financial services, gained over the last twenty-five years, to provide tax-efficient solutions (which may involve trusts), to advise on the most suitable products to accumulate growth, to recommend effective estate planning and strategies for efficient decumulation. Just as importantly, I also strive to ensure that my clients understand and are engaged with the progress towards achieving their objectives.
I feel honoured to be trusted with such responsibility and it is for this reason that I believe I probably have the best job in the world.
How do you approach your role on a daily basis?
One of the things I learned from Economics is its definition: 'the allocation of scarce resources'. I apply this principle to my working life. My client's time is scarce, my time is scarce. Time management is, therefore, essential. I prioritize how best to utilise my time given my workload, always keeping an eye on the high service standards we set at Quilter Cheviot Financial Planning. I am always looking at ways to better communicate with my clients, for example, visually by using tools such as cashflow planning and the Quilter Cheviot Financial Planning 4D profiling tool or being taken on a tour of a client's business to better understand her business.
What are your interests outside work?
Hmm, this seems to revolve an awful lot around my daughter! Certainly, one of the more expensive pastimes in my life! Apart from the usual, I have the latest Jordan Peterson book and an excellent looking book called 'A history of God' by Karen Armstrong to read on my next break. Also, I have recently returned from a magnificent long desired holiday to Andalusia, where I visited Seville, Cordoba and Granada. Now I am searching for books on the Umayyad Caliphate conquest.
