What attracted you to a career in wealth management?
After a short career in the British Army I joined Quilter Goodison (as Quilter Cheviot was then named) in 1990 to work with my father who had been with the firm since 1972. I joined as the 4th generation of my family to work for the firm, so I suppose it was inevitable!
I worked as my father’s assistant for 5 years while I gained my qualifications then took over his clients when he retired. Since then I have worked hard to generate and maintain long lasting relationships with my clients.
How do you look after / work with your clients?
My priority is personal service. I believe that it is paramount to manage clients’ investments with the view that it is their money and tailoring the portfolio to match what the client wants and expects, rather than simply follow a “one size fits all” model. Each of the portfolios I manage, be it for private clients, family trusts, charities or corporate entities, is carefully constructed with their requirements in mind. This is achieved through frequent and regular contact, both written and meetings in person, to review their objectives and see if their requirements have changed. I find this absolutely essential to provide the personal service that I strive to maintain.
What are your interests outside of work?
I am trustee of a number of different family and charitable trusts outside of work. To relax, I enjoy outdoor sports, in particular deer stalking and fishing with friends. Being out in the fresh air, preferably in Scotland, is a wonderful tonic to working in London. I also like to keep fit and am often in the gym or cycling, which I find is a great way to unwind.
